Spend the afternoon exploring the Peabody Essex Museum.  The museum’s 2.4-million-dollar collection ranks among the finest of its kind.  Browse the extensive outstanding works primarily from the 1700s to today: paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, textiles, architecture and decorative objects. PEM recently had a massive gallery expansion that added 40,000 square feet to the main facility!  The expansion and new galleries feature Salem Stories, Maritime Art, Asian Exports, Fashion & Design, the creative legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Powerful Figures featuring sculptures from different cultures around the world and across time. Tour the Yin Yu Tang House, the only complete Qing Dynasty house located outside China.  We’ll explore this 16-bedroom Chinese merchant’s house with our docent guide to discover this rare example of the region’s architecture and learn about the daily life of the eight generations of the Huang family that inhabited the house for over 200 years. The family’s well-documented genealogy and the accumulation of furnishings passed down through eight generations offer the opportunity to understand historical changes in China as they affect individuals in their daily lives and cultures on a global scale.
