Spend two nights exploring the best of Lower Manhattan, including the 9/11 Museum, the High Line, and the Statue of Liberty.
DAY 1 - Well arrive in the city at midday and stop for lunch at the historic Fraunces Tavern. Fraunces Tavern, the oldest & most historic bar in the city. It was known as the watering hole for many of the founding fathers & George Washington gathered his officers there to bid them farewell after the British Army left America at the end of the Revolutionary War. After lunch, visit the 9/11 Memorial & Museum . A moving tribute of remembrance and honor to those killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, and the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The names of every person who died in the attacks are inscribed on bronze panels edging the Memorials twin reflecting pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history. The 9/11 Museum is a collection of artifacts, photographs, audio & video tapes, personal effects, expressions of tribute and remembrance, and recorded testimonies, all relating to the history of the World Trade Center, the events of 9/11/2001 and 2/26/1993, and the repercussions of these seismic attacks. After your visit to the museum, you will have free time to explore Lower Manhattan and grab dinner on your own. Visit the observation deck at One World Observatory (admission required), explore St Pauls Chapel or the Wall Street financial district. After, we will depart for our hotel, just outside the city, the Hilton Garden Inn, Secaucus. (L)
DAY 2 - Enjoy a delicious culinary and historical journey through the renowned Chelsea Market, formerly the Nabisco Bakery, where the iconic Oreo Cookie was conceived. Along the way, youll discover the fascinating history, culture, and stories that transformed this historic building into one of New York Citys most beloved food destinations. Learn why a steam engine train once chugged through the markets main corridor and uncover other captivating details that set Chelsea Market apart from any other food hall in the city. As you explore, enjoy a variety of mouth-watering tastings from some of the best vendors while gaining insider knowledge about the owners, the foods you taste, and what makes this neighborhood so special. Youll get to enjoy two delicious, seated tastings and six on-the-go tastings. After exploring the market, well head to the High Line, the beautiful, elevated park that stretches alongside the Hudson River on what was once an active railroad line. Your guide will share the remarkable story of the High Lines transformation and the evolution of the Meatpacking District from an industrial hub into one of Manhattans most vibrant neighborhoods for dining, shopping, and culture. *Walking on The Highline is WEATHER PERMITTING for safety reasons. Youll have free time to explore Chelsea Market before we depart for a three-hour guided tour of Lower Manhattan. Our local guide will show us all the most important sights, including Federal Hall, the NYSE façade, Trinity Church, and the story of Wall Street's rise as the center of American finance, then stop for a photo at the iconic Bowling Green bronze bull and hear its guerrilla-art origin story. Well see the historic Stone Street district, with its Cobblestone lanes, Dutch colonial history, and restored 19th-century buildings, as well as the South Street Seaports Historic tall ships, the Fulton Market building, East River views, and the Brooklyn Bridge. Well end our tour in Little Italy, where youll have time for some shopping and dinner before we return to the hotel. (B, Lunch Food Tour)
DAY 3 This morning, we will get an up-close view of the beautiful Statue of Liberty and learn how it was made at the Liberty Museum, and youll be able to see the spectacular view of the Manhattan skyline from the Statue of Liberty Observation Deck. Then, its a short cruise over to Ellis Island, where you can take a self-guided tour or join in a docent-led tour. How far would you travel to find a better life? What if the journey took weeks under difficult conditions? If you answered, "whatever it takes," you echo the feelings of the 12 million immigrants who passed through these halls from 1892 to 1954. Ellis Island afforded them the opportunity to attain the American dream for themselves and their descendants. Experience their stories as we visit the Island of Hopes and Fears. Youll have the day to explore the Statue, Ellis Island, and Battery Park at your leisure before we return to the Cape.
