Monday, December 1 – Tuesday, December 9

 

We’ll spend three nights at our San Antonio hotel, the historic Omni la Mansion del Rio, located on the Riverwalk, which will be decorated with thousands of holiday lights. We’ll also tour Dallas, Fort Worth, Fredericksburg, and Austin.

 

DAY 1 – We’ll transfer to Boston by motorcoach, and fly to Dallas, air schedule and pricing tbd. We’ll meet our deluxe motorcoach and local tour guide at the airport. Then, head to Fort Worth where we’ll check into our hotel, the Springhill Suites in the heart of Fort Worth’s historic stockyards. We’ll enjoy a guided bus tour of Fort Worth. We’ll learn about the city’s fascinating western history and colorful past, see the sunken Fort Worth Water Gardens, and explore the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, where the Old West comes alive. Then, experience an authentic Cattle Drive as teams of Texas cowhands drive a herd of Texas Longhorn Cattle down Exchange Avenue. Enjoy an included dinner in the Stockyards tonight. (D)

 

DAY 2 – This morning, we’ll take a guided walk of the Stockyards, and see the Livestock Exchange Building. Then, included a delicious lunch at Joe T Garcia’s before we head to Dallas. Discover world-class art, award-winning architecture, thriving neighborhoods and beautiful parks on our highlights of Dallas tour. We’ll learn about Dallas’ urban revitalization and the professional sports teams that call Dallas home. Step back in time with a visit to Pioneer Plaza’s bronze Longhorn Cattle Drive, drive the route that JFK’s motorcade took through Dallas, see the grassy knoll, and visit the largest urban arts district in the US, the Dallas Arts District; and The Pegasus, a Dallas icon flying high over the skyline. Hear tales of the Chisholm Trail, Hell’s Half Acre, and famous outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Enjoy dinner on your own before we return to Fort Worth. (B,L)

 

DAY 3 We’ll return to Dallas today and visit the Sixth Floor Museum which is located at the very spot from which Lee Harvey Oswald shot and killed the President. The museum examines the life, death, and legacy of President John F. Kennedy. You’ll have time for lunch at the Dallas Farmers Market before departing for Waco. We will stop at Mammoth National Monument for a tour of the paleontological site and museum where fossils of 24 Columbian mammoths and other mammals from the Pleistocene Epoch have been uncovered. Then, head to our hotel in downtown Waco, the Hotel Indigo. (B)

 

DAY 4 – This morning, breakfast is on your own – either at the hotel at your leisure or fans of Fixer Upper can enjoy an early breakfast at Magnolia Table (on your own) before departing for Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a conservation center that specializes in the breeding of endangered species, public education, scientific research, and natural land management. The facility has over 1,000 animals from 50 species including giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and rhinoceros. We’ll take a two-hour tour of their 1,800 acres of pasture aboard their open-air tour vehicles. Then you’ll have time to enjoy lunch at the food trucks at the Magnolia Silos – there are plenty of options to choose from! You’ll have time to visit the Garden and Magnolia Seed & Supply as well as Magnolia Market at the Silos and the Silos Baking Company, filled with Joanna’s hand-picked favorite cookies, biscuits and cupcakes. Then you’ll have the afternoon to explore Waco on your own. Maybe you’ll visit the Dr. Pepper Museum or stop by the Texas Ranger Museum.

 

DAY 5 - This morning’s breakfast will also be on your own – either at the hotel at your leisure or at Magnolia Table. We’ll continue south to San Antonio and make a rest stop at Buc-ee’s, a Texas-sized convenience-store chain with a cult following and home-cooked food. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in Market Square before taking the #1 rated guided tour of San Antonio’s highlights. You’ll see iconic downtown landmarks, visit two missions with exclusive access to a guided tour inside the missions' churches, King William and  Japanese Tea Garden. Our hotel for the next three nights will be the historic hotel on the River Walk, the Omni la Mansion del Rio. You have the evening free to enjoy dinner and explore the River Walk. (L)

 

DAY 6 – We’ll start our day with a visit to “The Alamo” Mission and Fortress and enjoy the Alamo Audio Tour ‘A Line in the Sand’ narrated by country singer, Ray Benson, a 45-minute audio production that brings the 300 year history of the Alamo to life. The self-guided audio tour leads you through the Alamo Church, grounds, and includes 11 stops in the new Alamo Exhibit at the Ralston Family Collections Center where you can explore artifacts from the Phil Collins Collection, the Donald and Louise Yena Spanish Colonial Collection, and more. We’ll enjoy a delicious full hot buffet lunch at the historic Menger Hotel. You’ll have the evening on your own to explore the Riverwalk and take the narrated River Cruise to see the lights along the Riverwalk. (B, L)

 

DAY 7 – We will travel to the Texas Hill Country and take a driving tour of the LBJ Ranch. We will see the ranch, LBJ’s boyhood home and the Johnson settlement. Then, we’ll stop at Luckenbach, made famous by the Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings’ hit ballad about leaving the hassle and stress of everyday life behind for a simpler place. Learn the interesting history of the town and how it became a mecca for country music fans. Then, visit Fredericksburg and learn about its German heritage at the Pioneer Museum, which features settlers' homesteads and artifacts. Visit the National Historic District, which has many boutiques, art galleries, wine & beer tasting rooms, and the acclaimed National Museum of the Pacific War, dedicated to all those who served in the Pacific War (additional admission). Before leaving the Hill Country, we’ll stop to enjoy a Texas BBQ buffet. (B,D)  

 

DAY 8 – Today, take an in-depth walking tour of the impressive Pearl district, the gem of modern-day San Antonio. You will learn all about the history, architecture and revitalization of the Pearl Brewery, the museum reach of the Riverwalk,  have exclusive access to the Hotel Emma interior, meet a chef from an award-winning restaurant and experience behind-the-scenes portions of the impressive markets. You will walk past the CIA and learn about its' formation, function and significance in San Antonio and the Southwest, and being the foundation of the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation.  You’ll have the chance to enjoy lunch in the Pearl District on your own before we depart San Antonio and travel to the Hyatt Place, Downtown Austin. Enjoy a guided tour of Austin before getting the evening on your own to explore the city. (B)

 

DAY 9 – Our motorcoach will take us to the airport for our flight returning to Logan Airport.
