Find the serene peace of a bygone era on Mackinac Island, where cars are not allowed, and the only island transportation is by horse and carriage. Well overnight at the magnificent four-diamond Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, famous for its upscale accommodations and for having the worlds longest front porch. Youll enjoy a carriage tour of the island and an entire day at leisure to explore the island and relax in a rocking chair on the front porch while enjoying views of Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac. Well also visit the Bavarian town of Frankenmuth, Michigan, explore the Ford legacy in Dearborn, tour Detroit and visit Detroits Motown Museum.
DAY 1 Funtastic Getaways will provide transportation to Logan Airport from the Cape. Our non-stop airfare with JetBlue will depart Boston at 8:37 AM (flight 1137) and arrive in Detroit at 10:48 AM. Our motorcoach will meet us at the airport, and we will travel north to Mackinaw City, where we will stay for one night at the Baymont Wyndham. Our hotel is conveniently located downtown by many restaurants, shops and the casino. Enjoy the evening at leisure.
DAY 2 We will take the 20-minute ferry ride to Mackinac Island aboard Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry. Youll have time to explore the downtown area shops and enjoy lunch (on own) before our 1-hour narrated horse-drawn carriage tour of Mackinac Island. Our tour will end at the four-diamond Grand Hotel, one of the finest hotels in the world, where we will stay for two nights. Horse-drawn carriages, Afternoon Tea in the Parlor, Croquet and bocce in the Tea Garden, Dressing up for dinner and nightly dancing to the sounds of the Grand Hotel Orchestra, or sitting in a rocking chair on the worlds longest porch with beautiful views of the Straits of Mackinac. The Grand Hotel brings you back in time to a bygone era of old-world hospitality and charm, with a relaxing ambience, modern amenities & exceptional dining. Enjoy a delicious five-course dinner in the Main Dining Room, followed by demitasse in the Parlor, and ballroom dancing with the Grand Hotel Orchestra. DAY 3 - The day is yours to enjoy independently - walk the grounds and gardens, take a dip in the pool, explore the shops downtown (a five-minute walk), and relax in one of the many rocking chairs on the front porch. The hotel offers many activities throughout the day, all listed in your daily activity guide. There are many ways to spend the day on Mackinac Island! Enjoy a five-course dinner and dancing. (B,D)
DAY 4 Well take the ferry back to the mainland and enjoy time for lunch and shopping in Mackinaw City before traveling to Frankenmuth, known as "Michigans Little Bavaria." We will stay at the Bavarian Inn Lodge, located steps from downtown. Enjoy a delicious German feast at the hotel. (B,D)
DAY 5 - See the sights and learn about the towns Bavarian roots and history on a Frankenmuth City tour with our local guide. Then, well stop at Bronners CHRISTmas Wonderland, the World's Largest Christmas Store with beautifully landscaped grounds covering 27 acres. We will have free time for lunch and shopping in the quaint downtown, and then learn how to make strudel with our hands-on strudel-making experience. Then, enjoy a wine tasting featuring locally produced wines and dinner downtown at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant. (B,D)
DAY 6 Well continue on Dearborn, Michigan, where well take the Ford Rouge Factory Tour to get a behind-the-scenes view of the factorys complex web of robots, lifts, conveyors, hydraulics, chutes and cranes that make this one of the most envied manufacturing facilities in the world. Then, tour the Edsel & Eleanor Ford house, which was designed to resemble a cluster of Cotswold village cottages, complete with stone roofs, vine-covered walls, lead-paned windows, and gorgeous manicured grounds on the shores of Lake St Clair. Well stay for three nights at the Doubletree Hotel Detroit-Dearborn. Dinner is on your own tonight, but we will take those that want to try authentic Detroit pizza to Buddys Rendezvous Pizzeria, a Detroit Icon that has been called one of the five best pizzerias in the United States by the Food Network. DAY 7 Today we will visit the fascinating Henry Ford American Innovation Museum, home to thousands of artifacts that bring American ideas and innovations to life. A vibrant exploration of genius in all its forms, Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation allows you to experience the innovations from Americas greatest minds and their stories. Then, spend the afternoon at Greenfield Village to see the sights, sounds and sensations of Americas past. There are over 80 authentic buildings that have been moved to the site, including Noah Websters home, the home of the Wright brothers, and Thomas Edisons laboratory. You will take a ride in an authentic Model T and more on this journey into the past. Enjoy dinner at Fords Garage. (B,D)
DAY 8 Our local guide will take us on a tour of Detroit to witness the revitalization of a city that many had written off, visit some of the new pedestrian-friendly areas, see its legendary landmarks and learn about its fascinating past. Well be on and off the bus on our tour, visiting the art deco masterpiece many say is Detroits most beautiful building, the Guardian Building, the RiverWalk, and Greektown, known for its Victorian architecture and beautiful churches, including one which served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Well have time to see some of the murals on the side of the buildings, enjoy lunch and shopping at the famous Eastern Market, a marketplace in the heart of the city where youll find fresh food, restaurants, and unique shops. Then, step back in time at the Motown Museum to stand in Recording Studio A and to view the restored upper flat where Berry Gordy lived during the companys earliest days. Berry Gordys legendary Motown sound has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments of the 20th century. Recording artists included Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Lionel Richie & the Commodores. Enjoy a delicious farewell dinner tonight. (B,D)
DAY 9 Our last stop is at the highly-acclaimed Detroit Historical Museum, which chronicles the history of the Detroit area from its cobblestone streets & 19th century stores, the auto assembly line, toy trains, fur trading from the 18th century, and much more. Our non-stop JetBlue flight (2336) departs at 1:51 PM, and arrives in Boston at 3:43 PM. Transportation back to Sagamore, Barnstable & Dennis is included with your airfare purchase.
