Lake Winnipesaukee Summer Getaway

Monday, August 31 - Wednesday, September 2

Enjoy the summer sun at New Hampshire's pristine Lake Winnipesaukee! The Lakes Region of New Hampshire has been delighting visitors for generations. Dotted with 258 islands, Lake Winnipesaukee boasts 72 square miles of water and makes up the centerpiece of the regions natural beauty. Lake and mountain views set the backdrop for relaxing days spent strolling around charming lakeside villages, and enjoying just about every form of recreation.  Our hotel is the Inn at Mill Falls in Meredith, located on the Western shores of Lake Winnipesaukee within walking distance to the lake, the shops at Mill Falls, and local antique shops and restaurants.

The Inn at Mill Falls is located in a restored nineteenth-century linen mill with a tumbling 40-foot waterfall, indoor pool and great location adjacent to the Marketplace shops, restaurants, and main street activities. The hotel offers complimentary rentals to guests of bikes & helmets, stand up paddleboards, kayaks and canoes. They also have a variety of resort and lawn games, puzzles, board games, and a nightly campfire with s'mores and music.

Monday, August 31

We'll arrive at Lake Winnipesaukee and enjoy a 2 1/2 hour narrated cruise on Lake Winipesaukee aboard the MS Mount Washington, a first-class, 230-ft. excursion ship. Onboard, we'll be served a buffet lunch.  After our cruise, we will head to the Inn at Mill Falls, a beautiful hotel on the shores of the lake. The afternoon and evening are at leisure to explore the hotel, downtown Meredith, take a walk along the lake, or relax at the pool. (L)

Tuesday, September 1

We'll enjoy a full breakfast before departing for Castle in the Clouds, which sits high atop a mountain with spectacular views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains. The castle was built by Thomas Plant, who earned his fortune in the shoe industry at the turn of the 20th century. We'll tour his unique and stunning country estate, which was built on 6,300 acres and features a 16-room Arts and Crafts mansion, stable and six car garage, two gate houses, a greenhouse, a golf course and tennis court, a man-made lake, a boathouse on Lake Winnipesaukee, and miles of carriage and bridle trials. After our tour, we'll have a delicious hot lunch in the Carriage House, the building that was once home to the owner’s horses and has been converted into an award-winning restaurant. The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at leisure. Wednesday, September 2

After a full breakfast, we'll depart for a visit to the Loon Center & Markus Wildlife Sanctuary, which houses displays, exhibits and award-winning videos that will give you a greater understanding of New Hampshire’s loons and other wildlife. Then we'll stop at the Old Country Store & Museum, built in 1781, it is one of the oldest retail establishments in America.  They carry everything from penny candy to wrought iron hardware to unique crafts and gift items.  You'll have time to browse the store and visit the Country Store Museum above the store.  We'll continue on to nearby Squam Lake, where we will enjoy a delicious lunch at Walter's Basin Restaurant before boarding our canopied pontoon boat for a relaxing 90-minute cruise with a naturalist guide.  We'll learn about the natural history of Squam Lake, look for majestic Bald Eagles, and listen for the haunting call of Common Loons as we cruise on the beautiful lake where On Golden Pond was filmed almost 40 years ago.  Binoculars are available for wildlife viewing, but feel free to bring your own binoculars - and be sure to bring your camera!  After our cruise, we'll head back to the Cape.
