Coming to America

Coming to America

Travel to New York City and learn the history and stories of the immigrants that passed through Ellis Island and the city!

Coming to America

Tuesday, October 20 – Wednesday, October 21

It has been estimated that over 40% of Americans can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island. We’ll experience their journey on this tour when we see the Statue of Liberty that welcomed the weary travelers and visit Ellis Island, where they were either allowed into the country or turned back to their homeland. Experience their stories on our visit to Ellis Island, and tour the tenements and the Lower East Side, where many of them settled.

DAY 1 – We’ll travel to NYC and take a cruise to the Statue of Liberty for an up-close view of this beautiful statue, take an audio headset tour of the island, and learn how the Statue was made at the NEW Statue of Liberty Museum. Then, it’s a short cruise over to Ellis Island, where you can take a self-guided audio tour of the exhibits or join in one of the Ranger-led tours. You’ll see the halls where the immigrants were processed, the stairway where they were screened for possible signs of illness, and where some were separated from their loved ones for further testing. Your audio tour includes fascinating stories about the immigrant’s experiences when they arrived in this strange

new country. Enjoy time for dinner on own in the Times Square area before we head to the Hyatt Place Hotel in Secaucus, NJ.

DAY 2 - At the Tenement Museum, we’ll tour a tenement apartment and hear the powerful stories of the immigrants who built new lives and weathered hard times there. You’ll have time for lunch in the area - enjoy a pastrami sandwich at nearby Katz’s Delicatessen or grab a quick lunch and browse the shops in Little Italy & Chinatown. Then, we’ll meet our local historian guide for a walking and ethnic noshing (snacking) tour of the Lower East Side (Chinatown, Little Italy, East Village, NoLita), one of the most interesting areas in NYC with its’ rich history and immigrant, working class neighborhoods. The immigrants brought with them their traditions and their cuisine, and we’ll sample some of their ethnic foods like knishes, bagels, pickles, delicious Chinese & Italian pastries while learning about the immigrant experience and the ways that immigrant foods have shaped American food.
