Charleston, Savannah & Jekyll Island

Sunday, May 2 – Saturday, May 8, 2021

Explore the southern charms of Charleston, Savannah, and Jekyll Island, enjoying two nights in each location.

DAY 1 – We will fly from Logan Airport in Boston to the Charleston International Airport. Logan Airport transfers from Cape Cod are included, as are airport transfers in Charleston. We'll visit beautiful Magnolia Plantation & Gardens that have survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond.  Enjoy an included box lunch at the Plantation, and then tour the Plantation House, visit the gardens, and experience the plantations wildlife on a tram tour of the plantation’s wetlands, lakes, forests, and marshes.  We’ll overnight at the Embassy Suites in Charleston and enjoy the daily manager’s reception and dinner at the hotel. (D)

DAY 2 – Charleston is the state's most beautiful and historic treasure with a starring role in South Carolina history since its founding more than 300 years ago. The city's historic district today has barely changed, boasting 73 pre-Revolutionary buildings, 136 late 18th century structures and over 600 others built in the 1840s. We’ll take a journey through Charleston’s history with our licensed tour guide. We’ll see Charleston’s Historic Homes & Churches where generations of Charlestonians lived and worshiped; the Four Corners of LawRainbow Row, and we’ll step out of our air-conditioned mini-bus onto the famous Battery Seawall, and end our tour at the cultural heart of the city since 1807, the Historic Charleston City Market. With more than 50 resident Gullah artisans, the Charleston City Market is the place to find sweetgrass baskets, one of the nation's oldest and most beautiful handicrafts. You’ll have the afternoon and evening free to enjoy lunch & shopping at the Old Marketplace, returning to the hotel at your leisure using the free DASH shuttle, which can also be used to get to other attractions in the city – your tour director will hand out local attraction information and shuttle maps. (B)

DAY 3 – Before departing Charleston, we’ll take a one-hour horse and carriage tour of Charleston and enjoy lunch on own downtown before traveling to one of the Golden Isles of Georgia, Jekyll Island, which was once an exclusive playground for families with names like Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, & Pulitzer. The Jekyll Island Club soon became recognized as "the richest, most inaccessible club in the world." We’ll stay for two nights at the Jekyll Island Club Resort, which offers Victorian charm with modern conveniences in the center of the Historic District. At the hotel, you’ll find restaurants, bars, bicycle rentals, a swimming pool, gift shops, a fitness room, history tours, croquet, beach services, and more. Enjoy a Welcome Reception and a delicious dinner in the Main Dining Room. (B,D)

DAY 4 - We’ll learn about the Island’s history at the NEW Jekyll Island Museum, Mosaic, and get a glimpse into Jekyll Island’s "millionaire" legacy on our 1 ½ hour tram tour of the Jekyll Island Club that highlights the 240-acre historic district. We’ll step back in time at this National Historic Landmark as each building’s story unfolds, tour two of the historic cottages and Faith Chapel. Visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to learn about sea turtles and see how they are rehabilitated. You’ll have the afternoon at leisure to relax at the Resort or enjoy some of the daily activities. (B)

DAY 5 – Enjoy a fully narrated 90-minute dolphin/sightseeing cruise from the Jekyll Wharf as we travel the scenic intra-coastal waterway to observe the magnificent bottlenose dolphins feeding, playing, or simply cruising about in their natural habitat while you learn about their social behavior, feeding habits, and more. The waters around Jekyll are home to one of the world’s largest populations of dolphins. Along with seeing dolphins, there are often sea turtles, manatees, egrets, herons, roseate spoonbills, and osprey plus shrimp boats and luxury yachts seen on the cruise. Enjoy lunch on own at the dockside restaurant before we depart for Savannah. We’ll stop at Byrd’s Flagship Cookie Store & Bakery on our way into town for a tour of their factory and samples of some of their delicious cookies. We’ll stay in Savannah for two nights at the Staybridge Suites on Bay Street and enjoy the evening at leisure to explore the city. Our hotel is centrally located – an easy walk to City Market, Factors Walk, and the shops and restaurants on River Street. (B)

DAY 6 – Our tour conductor will reveal the history, sights, and charming city squares on our comprehensive 90-minute private trolley tour of "Georgia’s First City," Savannah. You’ll see Savanah’s many squares, Factors Walk, City Hall, the Cotton Exchange, the US Customs House, and the Forest Gump Bench. We’ll end our tour at City Market, where you’ll have time for lunch & shopping, and then enjoy a free afternoon to explore the many squares independently, shop the waterfront area, take a Savannah River Cruise or walking tour, or relax at the hotel, which is only a few blocks from the Market. Enjoy a farewell dinner at the Pirate House. (B,D)
