Monday, September 17 – Wednesday, September 26, 2018

We’re headed back out to the “wild west” on this getaway to the Badlands & Black Hills of South Dakota, Yellowstone National Park & the Grand Tetons National Park, so grab your cowboy hat and come on along!

DAY 1 – We’ll take our 5:00 AM or 6 AM flight (none of the airlines could get all 50 seats on one flight, so we have split the group) with United Airlines from Boston to Rapid City, arriving at 11:23 AM.  Our motorcoach will meet us at the airport, and we will travel to Rapid City and have time to enjoy lunch (on own) downtown.  Then, we’ll head to the centrally located Alex Johnson Hotel, where we will stay for three nights.  We’ll have time to relax before enjoying our first taste of the wild west at Fort Hays Chuckwagon dinner show.  You’ll have time to browse the Dances with Wolves film set and the Fort Hays Workshops at the Old West town, and then you’ll grab a handmade tin plate and cup for the cowboys to serve our authentic chuckwagon dinner on.  (BBQ beef, baked chicken, baked beans, cowboy potatoes and more).  After dinner, the Fort Hays Wranglers take the stage to entertain you with the Black Hills’ most popular music variety show.  D

DAY 2 – Visit the Badlands National Park, the rugged beauty of the Badlands draws visitors from around the world. These striking geologic deposits contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. The park’s 244,000 acres protect an expanse of mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.  We’ll stop at Ben Reifel Visitor Center and watch the National Park video, and then take the Badlands Loop through the park, making photo stops some of the overlooks. Then, you’ll have time to explore the historic town of Wall and the iconic Wall Drug, an enormous store where you will find souvenirs, pottery, books, clothes, gifts and much more.  We’ll take time to relax at the hotel before our visit to Mount Rushmore National Memorial. You’ll marvel at the majestic beauty of the Black Hills of South Dakota and see the massive sculpture carved into the granite of Mount Rushmore, the and experience the nightly patriotic lighting ceremony.  Dinner at the Carvers Café is included. B, D

DAY 3 - The Crazy Horse Memorial honors the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians. Our local guide will take our motorcoach to the base of the statue and give us the history of the monument.  We’ll learn about the progress that has been made on the world’s largest mountain sculpture, a memorial to the spirit of legendary Lakota leader Crazy Horse.  Then, enjoy the Crazy Horse Museum and shop for handmade Native American products in the marketplace.  We’ll travel into Custer State Park, which encompasses 71,000 acres of spectacular terrain, clear mountain waters and vast open ranges that are home to a herd of 1,300 bison that roam freely throughout the park, often stopping traffic as they walk along the scenic roads.  We’ll enjoy an included buffet lunch at the historic State Game Lodge, a gracious stone and wood lodge built in 1920 that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It served as the Summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge, and was also visited by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Our buffalo safari tour will take you off-road through the park in an open-air jeep in search of pronghorns, elk, and buffalo. Along the way, our guide will share facts about the park and wildlife.  Then, we’ll travel the famous Iron Mountain Road, designed with many curves and switchbacks, in order to limit the speed of travelers so that they would enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills. What makes this road so unique and memorable is not just the number of curves and the surrounding beauty, but also the architectural features found along this road. These features include pigtail bridges, and one lane tunnels that were built to showcase the American patriotic symbol, Mt. Rushmore. These tunnels frame Mt. Rushmore National Memorial like a picture frame and are a spectacular site.  The evening will be yours to enjoy the downtown location of our Rapid City hotel, which is walking distance to shops, Main Street Square, and the life-size bronze statues of our nation’s past presidents that line the streets and sidewalks. B, L

DAY 4 –Travel through the magnificent scenery in Wyoming, stopping to visit Devil's Tower, an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills. This site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area. At over 1200 feet tall, it is America's first National Monument, named by President Theodore Roosevelt under the Antiquities Act in 1906.  Then, we’ll will travel to Deadwood and take Kevin Costner's Original Deadwood Tour. As we travel down Deadwood's cobblestone streets, you will hear about an era gone by and see historical landmarks, points of interest and the Chinese and Badland sections of town. On the way to Mt Moriah Cemetery, our guide will recount the legendary lives of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and other Old West legends before we visit their final resting places.  Gaze down at Deadwood Gulch while enjoying the breeze and essence of ponderosa pine and hear about the Homestake Gold Mine.  We’ll overnight in Sheridan, WY at the Holiday Inn Convention Center.  B

DAY 5 – We’ll depart Sheridan and stop for a breathtaking view of Shell Falls and the Bighorn National Forest before we continue on to Cody. Enjoy lunch downtown and then we will visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, where the focus is on the life and times of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, the noted guide, scout, frontiersman, showman, actor, entrepreneur, town founder, and American icon.  Learn the story of Cody’s life and how it relates to the myth of the American West, and how, in an age without television or motion pictures, “Buffalo Bill” personified the enduring spirit of the American West.  Also included with your admission, and located on the property are the Draper Natural History Museum, the Whitney Western Art Museum, the Cody Firearms Museum, and the Plains Indian Museum.  We’ll enjoy a special performance of Dan Miller’s famous Cowboy Revue before departing the museum.  We’ll overnight at the Cody Hotel.  B, D

DAY 6 – Travel to Yellowstone National Park, where we will spend two nights at the Canyon Lodge, centrally located in the park.  We will stop at the beautiful Lake Yellowstone Hotel for an included full lunch buffet, and afterwards, our National Park Guide will take us on a tour of the parks Lower Loop road.  Sites you’ll see include Old Faithful Geyser, a highly predictable geothermal geyser, erupting up to 180 feet in the air; Old Faithful Village, and the Fountain Paint Pot area, which has all four of the hydrothermal features found in the park (mud pots, geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles).    B, L

DAY 7 - Take a full-day tour of Yellowstone National Park with our guide.  We’ll also stop at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, including the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River; the Tower/Roosevelt area, which contains the largest concentration of petrified trees in the world; and the Mammoth Hot Spring Terraces, a complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine.  We’ll also visit the Norris Geyser basin, as time allows. B, D

DAY 8 – We’ll depart Yellowstone National Park and travel south to Jackson Hole, WY.  We’ll make a morning rest stop at Jenny Lake, and arrive in Jackson Hole at noon.  Enjoy the rest of the day and evening exploring this quaint town.  We’ll stay two nights in Jackson Hole at the Springhill Suites, which is within easy walking distance to the downtown area. B

DAY 9 – We’ll travel to Teton Village, the Swiss-Style resort village, and take a tram ride to the top of Rendezvous Peak in the Teton Range. This unforgettable ride whisks passengers an amazing 4,139 vertical feet for unbeatable 360-degree views of the Tetons and surrounding National Park below.  Then, enjoy a Scenic Float Trip on the Snake River. The river runs through a pristine, natural landscape that is a special sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife, including the majestic bald eagle. The most prominent and impressive peaks in the Teton Range are ever present above you. This gentle 2-hour float is entirely located within the heart of Grand Teton National Park. We’ll enjoy a delicious farewell dinner at the beautiful Four-Diamond Wort Hotel. B, D
