Historic Hudson Valley Mansions

Monday, Sept 10 –Thursday, Sept 13

Join us for this trip to upstate New York’s Hudson Valley, where we will see magnificent mansions from the Guilded Age and visit West Point Military Academy.

DAY 1 – Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the historic Thayer Hotel on the grounds of West Point, then take a 90-minute guided tour of West Point Military Academy to learn about its famous history along with stories about its graduates that shaped our nation.  Our hotel for three nights is the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. (L)

DAY 2 - We’ll take a tour of the modest summer cottage that was a favorite retreat of Eleanor Roosevelt, Val-Kill; see the film "Close to Home" and the permanent exhibit, "Eleanor Roosevelt and Val-Kill: Emergence of a Political Leader." Then, take a student-led tour of the Culinary Institute of America, followed by an included lunch at their Restorante Caterina de Medici (if the group is less than 40 people, the restaurant will not offer a lunch and your trip price will be discounted the cost of the lunch).  Then, take a two-hour narrated cruise on the Hudson River aboard the Rip Van Winkle, passing historic lighthouses, waterfront mansions, and some of the rivers most unique and fascinating locations.  Bring your cameras, as a stunning panorama unfolds high above the Hudson River when we take a stroll on the Walkway over the Hudson River!  A delicious waterfront dinner at Shadows on the Hudson ends our day.  (B,D)

DAY 3 - We get a glimpse of life during the Gilded Age on our tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion, a remarkably complete example of a gilded-age country place, illustrating the political, economic, social, cultural, and demographic changes that occurred as America industrialized in the years after the Civil War.  Then,  tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home and Museum, Springwood Estate, which was the lifelong home of our 32nd president.  Enjoy lunch (on your own) at the Everready Diner, and then visit the Staatsburg Historic Site, a Beaux-Arts mansion of 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms to enjoy a special tour of the Mills Estate that compares the Mills to the elite families and servants on the famous Downton Abbey Series.  (B,D)

DAY 4 -  Before returning to the Cape, stop at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills for a tour and to see the beautiful stained glass windows made by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse.  Then, we’ll tour the stately mansion of the Rockefeller family, Kykuit, along with its gardens, Coach Barn, and collection of carriages & classic autos. (B)
