Christmas in New York City with optional Radio City Christmas Spectacular

Tuesday, December 10 – Thursday, December 12

Christmas in New York City is a magical time! There is so much to see and do – take in the holiday lights & animated windows at Rockefeller Plaza, Saks 5th Avenue, and of course Macy’s famous holiday window display. Join us for three days in the city with lots of free time, two half-day guided tours in lower Manhattan, and a chance to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular

DAY 1 – We’ll arrive in the city around noon and will have time for lunch before the 2 PM Radio City Christmas Spectacular – we have orchestra seating for the show.  After the show, you are free to explore the Rockefeller Center/Times Square area until our 7 PM departure. Those not taking the Radio City option will have the day free to explore the city – maybe take a hop-on-hop-off tour, see a show or visit one of the many museums.  We will overnight at the River Inn in Secaucus, N.J., about 15 miles outside of Manhattan.

DAY 2 – We’ll head back into the city and meet our guide for a Revolutionary Tour: Hamilton & Washington, Secrets of the Past.  On this immersive walking tour (approximately 1½ miles total walking over 3 hours), experience American history as you never have before, on the streets where it happened, and through the lives George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton, two men who were indispensable in shaping the destiny of the United States. We’ll recapture moments in the story of the US, the Sons of Liberty resistance, Hamilton’s early days as a patriot, Washington’s emotional farewell to his troops and triumphant return and inauguration on Wall Street, and Hamilton’s monetary policies that would forever shape the American economy.  We’ll see where George Washington was inaugurated and hear about his spy ring and his miraculous nighttime river escape.  We’ll hear about Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist papers that secured the ratification of the Constitution, and the letters behind the infamous Hamilton & Aaron Burr duel. We’ll also visit the 18th century chapel that Washington attended and see the resting place of Alexander Hamilton and his wife.  You’ll have time for lunch in the Wall Street area – perhaps at historic Fraunces Tavern where George Washington had a moving farewell gathering. We’ll take a docent tour of Fraunces Tavern Museum before returning to midtown for the afternoon at leisure. (B)

DAY 3 – We’ll meet our guide for a walking tour of the Lower East Side (Chinatown, Little Italy, East Village, NoLita), one of the most interesting parts of NYC with its’ rich history as immigrant, working class neighborhoods.  At the Tenement Museum, we’ll tour a tenement apartment and hear the powerful stories of the immigrants who built new lives and weathered hard times there. We’ll take a walking and ethnic noshing (snacking) tour of the Lower East Side.  The immigrants brought with them their traditions and their cuisine, and we’ll sample some ethnic foods like knishes, bagels, pickles, delicious Chinese & Italian pastries while learning about the immigrant experience and the ways that immigrant foods have shaped American food. You’ll have time for shopping and lunch in Chinatown & Little Italy and have a chance to get a delicious pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen before we depart the city. Bring a small cooler on this tour to bring home some treats for holiday entertaining!
