Friday, May 25 - Friday, June 1, 2018

On this getaway, we’ll explore the southern charms of Charleston and Savannah, and visit Georgia’s Golden Isles of Saint Simon and Jekyll Islands.

DAY 1 - We’ll spend our first night in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

DAY 2 – We’ll continue south to our hotel in the in the heart of Savannah, the Staybridge Suites on Bay Street.  Our hotel is within easy walking distance to the City Market as well as the riverfront shops and Factors Walk. Enjoy a delicious dinner at the Riverhouse Restaurant. (B,D)

DAY 3 - We’ll explore the historic district on our three-hour guided city tour, seeing Savanah’s many squares, Factors Walk, City Hall, the Cotton Exchange, the US Customs House, and the Forest Gump Bench.  We’ll stop at City Market for lunch & shopping, and enjoy a free afternoon to explore downtown independently, shop the waterfront area, take a Savannah River Cruise or relax at the hotel. (B)

DAY 4 - We will visit two of the Golden Isles of Georgia - Saint Simons and Jekyll Islands.  Saint Simons Island is noted for its moss-draped live oaks, beautiful beaches and great restaurants. We’ll take a two-hour guided tour of the island, visit Christ Church, see the Saint Simon’s Lighthouse, and enjoy lunch and shopping in the Village. Then, we’ll visit nearby Jekyll Island, once an exclusive playground for America's industrial barons.  Jekyll Island was built as an exclusive winter retreat known as the Jekyll Island Club, and soon became recognized as “the richest, most inaccessible club in the world.” We’ll learn about the Island’s history at the Jekyll Island Museum, and then get a glimpse into Jekyll Island’s "millionaire" legacy on our 1 ½ hour tram tour of the Jekyll Island Club highlighting the 240-acre historic district.  We’ll step back in time at this National Historic Landmark as each building’s story unfolds, and tour two of the “cottages.”  (B,D).

DAY 5 - We’ll explore the beautiful Magnolia Plantation & Gardens that have survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond.  We’ll tour the Plantation House; visit the gardens, and experience history and wildlife on a tram tour of the plantation’s wetlands, lakes, forests, and marshes.  We’ll enjoy an included box lunch at the Plantation before we head to picturesque Wadmalaw Island to visit the Charleston Tea Plantation, the home of American Classic Tea. Its grounds include 127 acres of tea plants, a working Tea Factory and a charming Plantation Gift Shoppe. We’ll take a tour of the tea factory, and a Trolley Tour of the scenic grounds, learn about how tea is produced, and enjoy tea samples. We’ll continue on to Charleston, where we’ll overnight at the King Charles Inn in Charleston’s Historic District.  Enjoy the daily afternoon managers reception (tea & cookies) at our hotel. (B)

DAY 6 - We’ll see what life was like for the wealthy residents of Charleston when we tour the Nathaniel Russell House Museum, a Grand Federal townhouse that has a restored interior with elaborate ornamentation and a magnificent flying staircase. Set amid spacious gardens and furnished with period antiques, the house evokes the gracious lifestyle of the city's elite.  Experience what life was like for the wealthy residents of Charleston when we visit the Aiken-Rhett

House Museum, the city’s most intact antebellum urban complex. You’ll see the historic interiors of the main house, slave’s house, stable, carriage house, kitchen & laundry building, all surviving virtually unaltered since 1858.  Enjoy time for lunch and shopping at the Old Marketplace, before our one-hour horse and carriage tour of Charleston to see the highlights of Charleston’s past and learn about the history of the city.  (B,D)
