A Colonial Christmas
Wednesday, December 5 - Sunday, December 9
Experience a Colonial Christmas on this getaway to Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Old Town Alexandria and Washington, DC! Well spend three nights at the magnificent Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Washington, DC. The spectacular waterfront resort, with a stunning 19-story glass atrium and sweeping views of the Potomac River, features a rejuvenating spa, indoor pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, and unique restaurants and shops. It will be elaborately decorated for the holidays, and each evening the atrium comes to life with a holiday extravaganza that includes classic Christmas music, laser lights, a dancing fountain and indoor snowfall!
DAY 1 We will begin our trip to the past in Historic Philadelphia at the NEW Museum of the American Revolution. From the early stirrings of unrest in Boston to the opening shots of the War of Independence, and from the signing of the Declaration of Independence to the creation of the American Republic, the Museum's core exhibition explores the ideas, events, and legacies of America's revolutionary beginnings. Then, enjoy an 18th-century-inspired dinner at City Tavern, and take a journey back to 1776 when we are led to Independence Hall for an after-hours visit guided by the night watchman. Well find there some spirits of 1776, as we eavesdrop on Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin discussing the Declaration of Independence. Our National Park Service Ranger will talk about the historic building and answer any questions you may have. Well overnight just outside the city at the Crowne Plaza Cherry Hill, NJ. (D)
DAY 2 Well travel to Alexandria for a tour of Mount Vernon, George Washington's popular plantation in Virginia and one of the nations most beloved historic sites. Learn about his life and tour his home of more than 40 years. Then, well meet our guide for a tour of Old Town Alexandria, originally laid out in 1749, Old Town is full of cobbled streets and well-preserved 18th century buildings. Well see many historic 17th- and 18th-century homes, hear colorful stories about the founding fathers, and discover George Washingtons old stomping grounds, including Gadsby's Tavern Restaurant and Museum, which hosted Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison and James Monroe, among many other dignitaries. Well also see the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Christ Church, the 7-foot-wide Spite House, Robert E. Lees Boyhood Home and the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Then, well check into the magnificent Gaylord National Hotel. This four-diamond Hotel sits on the banks of the Potomac River, and boasts an 18-story 1 ½ acre glass-covered atrium with fountains, five restaurants and a two-story roof-top Lounge, all lavishly decorated for the holidays. In the atrium, a 60-foot tall suspended glass Christmas tree and cascades of twinkling lights hang from the ceiling, see an indoor snowfall and the waters of the atrium fountain dancing to holiday music! The evening is yours to explore the hotel and enjoy dinner (on own) at one of the many restaurants at the National Harbor. (B)
DAY 3 - Well travel to Colonial Williamsburg, a living-history museum showcasing buildings from the 17th, 18th, 19th-centuries. The Historic Area is an interpretation of a colonial American city, with dozens of restored or re-created buildings related to its colonial and American Revolutionary War history. The Christmas season is a magical time to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia - the decorations, exhibits and re-enactors demonstrate how the holidays were celebrated during America's colonial period in the late 1700s. Then, travel to nearby Busch Gardens Europe for the Christmas Town at Busch Gardens Celebration, one of the largest Christmas light displays in North America, where youll enjoy heart-warming shows and holiday shopping amid the glow of more than eight million lights. Each country at Busch Gardens will feature their own Christmas traditions. In Germany, youll find a traditional German Christmas Market, light show and 45-foot tree, and a live musical tribute to Christmas traditions. In France, youll experience an ice village complete with penguins. Join the townspeople of Killarney, Ireland as they celebrate Christmas with music and playful surprises. There will be lots of Christmas lights, shopping and music throughout Christmas Town. Enjoy dinner at any of the restaurants while at Busch Gardens with your included meal voucher. (B, D)

We will see the Capitol Visitor Centers film, "Out of Many, One," and take a guided tour of the US Capitol Building to see the magnificent building that houses our Congress including the Crypt, the Rotunda, and National Statuary Hall. At the US Botanic Gardens, youll see the buildings that line the National Mall and other prominent Washington DC buildings and memorials crafted out of plant-based natural materials, fanciful garden-train exhibits, and one of Washington's largest indoor holiday trees towering over pools of colorful poinsettias.
